Airbag Inspection Systems What is this?

Airbag Inspection Systems
This service involves checking the airbag circuitry to ensure that the system is functioning properly. The exact service varies from one manufacturer to another. All that is involved in some vehicles, such as Hondas, is turning the ignition key to the accessory position, checking for the airbag light to come on and then watching for it to go off after about 10 seconds.

Other manufacturers, such as DaimlerChrysler, will attach a “scanner” to the vehicle to see if any trouble codes are stored in the airbag control module.

Should I do this service when it’s recommended?
Absolutely.

Some vehicles use an airbag icon instead of a warning light to show that the airbag is activated and works properly.
Why do I have to do this?
If the airbag bulb on your dashboard burns out and you don’t notice it, it’s possible that your airbag system will not work properly — and you won’t have any indication of this.

What happens if I don’t do this?
If you are in an accident in which your airbag normally would activate to protect you, it may not deploy. You can figure out the rest.

Can I do this myself?
It depends on where you rank on the Car Talk do-it-yourself scale:

_X_ There are two kinds of screwdrivers?

__ I’ve successfully hung pictures around the house.

__ I’ve changed my own oil.

__ I’ve fixed things on my car that involve removing more than five bolts.

__ I’ve built a working nuclear reactor out of wood.

Is there any maintenance required between intervals?
The only maintenance you’ll encounter is if you notice the airbag light on your dash not coming on at all, staying on or flashing. In this case, your airbag system may not function properly when and if it is needed. If your light displays any of these descriptions, have it checked as soon as possible.

Car Talk Tip: The oldest airbags — excluding ourselves — are now about 20 years old. No one really knows how long they age yet still function properly. Each year, Volvo sets off a few of their oldest airbags, and so far, they’ve all worked properly.
