The base models from 1991 to 1996 were powered by a 3.0 liter DOHC [double overhead camshaft] V6 engine with 10:1 compression, having 222 horsepower. With 24 valves and fuel injection it was more than adequate as a base engine.

One step up from the base model was the SL model Stealth. Considered the luxury version of the Stealth, it’s differences were not always apparent to the eyes. Although Dodge decided to stick with the same 3.0 liter engine.

The VR4-T/T Turbo was the ”bad boy” of the family. Powered by a well built 3.0 L DOHC 24-valve, twin-turbocharged, twin-intercooled V6, the VR4 produced either 300 BHP at 6000 RPM or 320 BHP at 6000 RPM depending on the turbo boost settings. Basically the whole car was set up for this monster motor. Larger brakes, stiffer suspension and bigger tires were a few of its’ ultra performance parts.

The Spyder was a rare edition of the VR4. They did not sell well because of the steep price and were discontinued prematurely.

Car Transmission Won’t Move In Reverse

Hello,

I have a 1988 Ford Crown Victoria Cop car that I recently purchased. I knew when I bought it that the transmission slipped between 1st and 2nd gear but it’s a classic and it was drivable. I took it to be inspected and he was pretty rough on her, and now she will not reverse. Forward, she does just fine. But she will not go backwards unless the car is off and in neutral. When it is on and in neutral she shoots forward when you take your foot off the brake. What should I do?

Hi there LM,

Unfortunately if you have checked the transmission fluid level and it’s full of fluid there is not much more you can do without removing the transmission or dropping the transmission pan and looking inside. I would suspect you have an internal wear issue and some form of “overhaul” is going to be needed.

Reverse gear is usually the first gear to go out followed by the forward gears soon after. Be prepared to overhaul the whole transmission if the shop wants to remove it for inspection. icon sad Car Transmission Wont Move In Reverse

Ford F250 Engine Will Not Start

Good morning,

I have a 1997 F250 HD with a 351, my problem is this. The truck started knocking and pinging and eventually stalling, at first it would start right up then it would take about twenty minutes of sitting before it would start. I changed the fuel filter it seemed to work for a while but now it starts and runs but will not start once I shut it off but if I let it sit over night it will start again. I am not sure if it is a fuel issue or electrical or what? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi there David

If you don’t have a service soon light on, I would first start with checking fuel pressure at the engine with a fuel pressure gauge. You could have a weak/bad fuel pump. If you do have a service light on, I would first read your computer codes. Although, you could have a service light/code stored in memory because of the knocking and stalling issue which is a symptom not the cause. Sometimes you can bang on the bottom of the fuel tank with your fist or block of wood AS someone is cranking the engine over. this can help jump start a weak fuel pump.

Should I Buy a New Car or Fix Mine?

Hi there,

I have a 91′ Toyota Camry that needs to replace its transmission. I’ve taken it to several shops and they have each quoted me around $1500 for replacement.

I just put in about $800 into brake repair and $250 on new tires in the past year and a half (tires last summer).

I’ve spoken with friends who say that it is not worth it to put that much money into such an old car, but I’ve grown fond of it. To be honest I’m not familiar with car mechanics so I haven’t maintained it as well as I should have in the past. But I’m planning on buying a book to study and learn so that I can take better care of my cars in the future.

Now my question is, should I invest this money into a new transmission or should I buy a new car? I’m on a budget at the moment so I can’t really spend more than $2000. The problem with buying a new car around that price is that there will most likely be problems so I’ll be paying even more in the months to come.

I’m just at a loss and confused about what to do. I hope you can help me. I’m a college student and I only need this car for about another 2 years before I invest in a new one.

Personally I would not spend any more money on this vehicle, mainly due to its age. I would suggest that you take a test drive of a Kia Rio, http://www.kia.com/#/rio/explore/360-views-and-colors-exterior/ they are one of my favorite recommendations at the lower price points.

You can get a college student credit, and get very low financing…..and hopefully there is a 2009 somewhere in your area for less than $10K. You can probably get a brand new one for $12K with taxes and everything….I am just guessing. Go a test drive one and really think about it with an open mind….check out the trunk space and rear seating space and the fuel mileage. icon smile Should I Buy a New Car or Fix Mine?

You can put down $2K, and you can probably get $800-1000 for your car on craigslist.com which you can also put towards a new car.

Play hardball……LEAVE the dealership in anger at least once, really, do it. make sure they have your cell number….they will call you back. I always give them my lowest of the low numbers, then take a test drive and play very interested but stand firm on my number. If they cant get close, I just walk away and leave…..and they always call me back at a lower price. Gotta stand firm.

My Car is Leaking Antifreeze – Where?

Hi, my car overheated and is leaking antifreeze.. All my gauges are normal so i didn’t think anything before it over heated. I put water in the radiator and it just kept sucking it down, it never over flowed. I only did it for about 2 or 3 mins. I know absolutely nothing about cars… I was wondering f you can help.. And maybe tell me the problem and what to do… and maybe the cost??? ( it is a 2002 firebird, if that helps)

Yooooooo Brittany,

I would HIGHLY suggest you take the car to a mechanic and have them perform a cooling system pressure test, its cheap and easy and will tell you where the coolant is leaking from so you can fix it. Test should cost less than $60 or so, and they can probably do it while you wait. Even most oil change places can do it for you.

Once you find out where the leak is you can email me back if you need help.

Honda Odyssey Maintenance Questions

I’ve greatly appreciated the guidance you’ve given in the past and have a few questions I need to run by you.

1. I’m looking to replace my timing belt on an ’03 Odyssey LX (85K mi). In that regard:
-Through my local auto store I have a choice of a Contitech or Dayco belt. Do you approve of either of these or would you recommend an alternative (to include an OEM belt from the dealer).
-I plan on replacing the water pump at the same time. Through my local store I have a choice of GMB (about $70) and Edelbrook (starting at $189) brands. Are these ok or do you have other recommendations?
-Would you recommend changing the belt tensioner and the belt idler at the same time?

2. What are your views on K&N flat air filters? Since I’ll be using this on a family car (’06 Accord) I’m not really concerned about performance. Rather I’m thinking of going this route since it appears to be an economically good decision versus continuing to purchase disposable paper filters. The only concerns I’ve heard concerning the K&N filters are:
-Potential damage to the Mass Air Flow Sensor (from the oil on the filter)…sometimes due to over oiling. The K&N site has a long discussion on this issue.
-The cotton in the filter breaking down in time, thereby lessening the effectiveness of the filter.
-Under oiling the filter, thereby lessening the effectiveness of the filter.

3. My ’06 Accord factory pads are semi-metallic. I’m thinking of replacing these with Ceramic pads. From what I hear, some of the virtues of these pads include:
-less dust
-longer lasting than other pads
-less wear on rotors
Would you recommend going with these. Also, I have a choice between Wagner and Akebono pads. The Akebono’s are more expensive. Are they worth paying the extra money?

Hi there Rob,

How are you?

I would call the Honda dealer parts department and get their prices, Honda usually is very competitive and if they are close to the aftermarket prices I would buy genuine Honda timing belt and water pump. Dayco is a very popular belt that is of high quality and I would have no problem using them.

Usually you dont replace the tensioner unless there is visible wear on the pulley and same as the idler pulley. Sometimes I will replace the timing seals inside the timing cover for the cam seals when we do a timing belt job, then sometimes we just leave things alone.

I would not mess with a KN filter, it will not be of a benefit to this engine to warrant the cost and effort over a standard paper filter.

Ceramic might last longer, sometimes you get a noise issue using them…so there could be a trade off – noise for extended life, just seems to depend on the brake rotors and how they handle the ceramic.

I have had good luck with using Wagner and Bendix brake pads but I would bet the Honda pads are about the same price if not less. Honda brake pads are quiet and seem to last a long time.

Its just hard to be Honda at anything, parts or vehicles they have the system down.

Compare prices for installation at the dealership vs an independent garage, its probably not much more and you might get a better warranty and install.
